The Mermaid of Black Conch, auteur MONIQUE ROFFEY, leesniveau B2

Once a beautiful young woman, Aycayia was cursed by jealous wives to live as a mermaid for the rest of her days. But after she is caught by American tourists, fisherman David rescues her and hides her away in his home. Now David must work to win Aycayia’s trust while she relearns what it is to be human – and discover whether she will be able to free herself from the curse.

Review

Roffey’s writing is a delight to swim in. It’s lyrical and lovely, and it flows clear and deep as the waters around Black Conch. Her landscape descriptions are rich, whether she is painting pictures of the lush forest shading Miss Rain’s house or of the ocean: “The sea was flat and turquoise in the shallows, purple in the deep…The sea was the giant woman of the planet, fluid and contrary.”

Lessons in Chemistry, auteur Bonnie Garmus, leesniveau C1

Life is unpredictable. And so it is that chemist, widow, and single mother Elizabeth Zott suddenly finds herself the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show: Supper at Six. But it is the early 1960s, and not everyone is happy with Elizabeth’s popularity. Because Elizabeth Zott is not just teaching women to cook; she is daring them to change the status quo.

Review

I flew through Lessons in Chemistry in only a few sittings because I was absolutely hooked. Elizabeth Zott is such a fearless, strong, and inspiring main character. While she struggles to be seen as a chemist, she refuses to let how others see her hold her back. Even when she is working as a television host, she maintains her identity as a chemist.

The Forty Rules of Love, auteur Elif Shafak, leesniveau C1

Ella Rubenstein is forty years old and unhappily married. Her new job is to report on Sweet Blasphemy: a novel written by a man named Aziz Zahara. Ella is mesmerized by his tale of the wise man Shams. Shams and his rules offer Ella insight into a philosophy based on the unity of all people and religions. She is shocked by the similarities between her life and the story, and realizes that Zahara has come to set her free…

Review

Forty Rules of love is one heck of a book that explores the realms of spirituality, love, God, and religion. It is something that will urge you to look inwards. The author has weaved the story in a very unique way. It encourages the readers to follow their hearts. It is a must-read book.
