About the writer

Best known for her role as Hilary Banks in the 90s hit show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, author Karyn Parsons’s debut book takes an unflinching and captivating look at identity and racism in American society. To people who haven’t followed her career, this might seem like a random path for her to take, but Parsons has been dedicated to telling African American stories since she founded the nonprofit Sweet Blackberry, which focuses on telling stories about black people in America. The charity has produced three award-winning animated films that center black history and heritage, which is in line with the themes of How High the Moon.

Seventeen-year-old Flora Banks has an illness and can’t remember anything for very long. She writes notes to herself to help her remember things. But one day, Flora kisses a boy and she remembers it. Flora must find the boy who kissed her and learn why she still has that one memory.

Review

The thing which stuck with me the most was how beautiful Emily Barr’s writing is. Sheer emotion radiates from every sentence, and I haven’t felt so much sadness for a book character in a long while. Barr cleverly portrays Flora’s illness through her writing style; it is fairly simple to reflect Flora’s 10 year old mind, but at the same time it is heavy-going due to the amount of repetition involved to emphasise how frustrating and confusing the world is to her.
